Herzog is best known for his managerial career, which spanned 17 seasons. He managed the Cardinals for 11 seasons, leading them to the World Series title in 1982.

Herzog's managerial style was known for its emphasis on small ball and aggressive base running. He managed the Cardinals to five National League East division titles and two National League pennants.

After leaving the Cardinals, Herzog managed the California Angels and the Kansas City Royals. He also served as the general manager of the Angels and the Royals.
